Editing Guide
This page will be the guide for editing pages, posts and various sections of content.
Formatting Options
This will give you an idea of what different formatting options look like in the blog. The formatting is done using the text editor provided with WordPress. The above section has been formated as “Heading 3.” The most common formatting changes will be changing text to bold, changing text to italic, or underlining text. The header options will appear as follows:
Header 2
Header 3
Header 4
Header 5
Some of these have been formatted for specific locations so they will not work within the pages (such as “Header 4″). The page title is “Header 1″ while the page sub-titles are “Header 3.”
- You may also choose to place some items into an un-ordered list.
- These will be placed next to bullet points.
- Each item will be on it’s own line and intented.
- An ordered-list will give each of the items numbers.
- You don’t need to worry about the numbers.
- They are automatically inserted.
- If you add something to the middle of the list the numbers will automatically adjust.
Adding / Editing Pages
Pages can be added or deleted as you see fit. When any page is added it will automatically appear within the menu. A sub-page can be added by giving a page a “Parent” on the right side of the editing screen. This will cause the page to appear as a fly-out when the parent page is hovered over. There are some exceptions to this below.
If you are logged into the site and viewing a particular page, there will be an “edit” link at the bottom of the page. This allows you to simply log in, go to the page you would like to edit, and then click the link. This link also appears to the ‘Odd sections’ (see below). For anyone viewing the content and not logged, such as potential customers, in these links will not be visible.
Menu Ordering / Excluding
The menu order is dictated by the order set on each page. To move a page up, simply give it an order number lower than the item you want below it, or visa versa. If two pages have the same order number then they will be placed alphabetically. The order option is located on the right side of the editing screen.
To exclude a page from the left menu, but include it within the footer menu, such as the Franchise page, simply give the page the “Parent” or “EXCLUDE.” To Exclude the page from both menus give the page the “Parent” of “EXCLUDE ALL”; That has been done to this page. Then the page can only be reached with a direct link.
Adding Posts
Posts will appear on the “News” Page in a Blog format. The Date of the post along with who posted it will appear. The text will automatically be truncated with a “Continue Reading” link added at the bottom so that the age doesn’t stretch on forever. You can also manually create the “Excerpt” that will appear here by adding it on the post editing page.
Editing Odd Sections
There are several content sections that are also controlled by the posts. These include the “We Repair” list on the home page and the sidebar list. To edit these areas simply login, navigate to the home page, and click the “Edit” link directly below the content. When your done changing the content, select “Update” and the content will be changed. These sections are excluded from the News page and included in their proper location by using the the Category option. They are listed under “EXCLUDE” category so they do not appear within the News page.
Adding Images
Images can be added to any page using the built in image tool directly above the Content editor. The Gallery can be changed by going to the gallery page wile logged in and selecting “Edit.” Click on the gallery box and a pop-up will give you several options relating to the gallery. To add new images select “From Computer” from the top tabs and upload the images you want to add. When this is done go back to the “Gallery” tab and the image should be there. By changing the “Title” of the image you can add a description so that people can know what work was completed.
Adding Images to the Home Page Rotator
The rotator on the home page is created using three separate image folders. The images in each of the folders displays in either the left, center or right rotating section. To add images you will need to manually upload the images to the folders using an FTP client. The folders are located at: “public_html/wp-content/themes/The_Detail_Difference/HeaderImages/”. Upload the images to the corresponding left, center and right folders and the images will appear in the rotator.
I highly suggest cropping and sizing the images before uploading. They should be sized 300 pixels wide and 144 pixels tall. The slideshow order is the list of images in alphabetical order. To move an image to a different location simply re-name the image so that it is in a different location alphabetically.
